After 138 years of patient care, LHSC’s South Street Hospital officially closed its doors in January 2013 and the main building was demolished in 2015, and the lands reverted back to their owner - the City of London. Read updates and view photos from this time below.

April 7, 2015 - (City of London) Colborne & South St. construction
The City of London has advised LHSC that it is undertaking a construction project on Colborne St. (from Grey St. to Thames River) and South St. (from Colborne to Maitland). The bulk of the demolition work on the former South Street Hospital building is complete and the site will remain quiet over the winter months. In the spring once the ground has thawed and dried there will be topsoil spread for hydroseeding.
September 11, 2014 - Demolition of North Wing
Demolition of the final part of the former South Street Hospital - the North Wing - is scheduled to begin the week of Sept. 15, 2014, lasting approximately 10 days. As part of this demolition, pedestrians in the vicinity may be able to see asbestos abatement workers and Pro-Green workers wearing respirators and disposable coveralls for their protection as a small amount of asbestos contained in the wall plaster cannot be practically removed prior to demolishing this buliding. This protective gear is strictly precautionary and air levels will be montired throughout the building's demoltion. The building's demolition is in compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and there is no risk posed to the public or local residents.

July 18, 2014 - Temporary Noise Permit, Construction Noise
Pro-Green Demolition has been granted a temporary noise permit (PDF) by the City of London to extend the working hours of the South Street Demolition from 6pm to 9pm from July 21 to Aug. 1. The extended hours are necessary to complete the demolition of the upper two floors of the main building in a safe manner. While this work is underway, Pro-Green cannot stop work until all structural elements from each section are removed. The pace of this work is difficult to predict and so the extended working hours will allow sufficient time to ensure that the upper floors of the building are left in a safe condition at the end of each day.

April 28, 2014 - Thameswood Lodge Demolition
The Thameswood Lodge is scheduled for demolition the week of April 28 and pedestrians and local residents may be able to see asbestos abatement workers. Labourers and machine operators will be wearing respirators and disposable coveralls for their protection during the demolition as a small amount of asbestos contained in the wall plaster cannot be practically removed prior to demolishing this buliding.

LHSC was pleased to welcome neighbours of the SoHo community (“south of Horton”) to an open house where they learned more about the demolition plans for the old South Street Hospital (SSH) and adjacent buildings.
