What LHSC is doing to address Emergency Department Wait Times

  1. Fast track units in the Emergency Departments

At LHSC’s Victoria Hospital and University Hospital emergency departments, fast track units have been implemented for less acute patients, to receive timely assessment and care, decreasing their length of stay. This ensures that all patients receive the care they need in a timely manner.

  2. Patient communication tools

Patient communication tools have been developed to address patient needs, answer frequently asked questions and assist in making the hospital experience less stressful.

  3. 11:00 a.m. check-out time

LHSC also implemented a policy of an 11:00 a.m. check-out time for patients being discharged from hospital. This greatly assists us in being able to admit patients needing a bed, many of which come into the hospital through the emergency departments.

  4. Work with community partners

Community partners, such as the South West Community Care Access Centres (CCAC) are engaged to ensure that patients requiring CCAC case upon discharge receive the right service, at the right time and in the right place. CCAC case managers work closely with our teams on wards to arrange the needed home care supports for patients. In addition, they work in our emergency departments each day to provide home care resources to patients so that they do not need to be admitted in the first place.

Our staff and physicians work everyday to make a difference for our patients and their families by providing compassionate care. We are very proud of our tradition of care and the important role we play in the community.
