LHSC’s Children’s Hospital welcomed new four-legged friends, Zombie and Igor, when the Pet Therapy program began visiting paediatric patients once per week. The Pet Therapy program is offered in partnership with St. John’s Ambulance, and is provided on certain inpatient units where the therapeutic benefits are expected to be significant to patients.

LHSC performed the world’s first robotic assisted aortic valve replacement in patients with aortic valve stenosis, using the da Vinci® surgical system. The procedure was performed by a multidisciplinary team, led by Dr. Bob Kiaii using a tissue valve called the Perceval S Valve from Liva Nova.

Volunteers, staff and physicians of Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre joined together on June 27 to host the 25th Annual Teddy Bear Picnic. Over 100 children who are either inpatients or current outpatients of the hospital and their families shared laughter, fun and food in the atrium of Victoria Hospital.

Over 50 participants from LHSC marched in London’s Pride Parade on July 29. LHSC leadership and staff were joined by their families a couple of furry friends for the rainy 3km walk, handing out goodies to the thousands of spectators lining the route.

LHSC’s summertime Blood Donor Challenge resulted in 167 blood donations, including 60 new Partners for Life members, and 10 LHSC groups.

A multi-gene panel technology developed by LHSC became available through the global life sciences company LabCorp® to perform genetic testing for Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease, epilepsy, and mitochondrial disorders. Availability of these genetic tests outside of Ontario through this licensing agreement will generate revenue for LHSC that can be used to fund further advances in patient care.

Every four years LHSC welcomes Accreditation Canada’s surveyors to review its processes and services to identify what is being done well and any opportunities for improvement. In 2018, LHSC received the highest award from Accreditation Canada, Accredited with Exemplary Standing. The award signifies LHSC’s commitment to continuous improvement and providing the highest quality and safest care possible as measured against a set of nationally recognized standards.

A state-of-the-art Interventional Radiology Fluoroscopy Suite opened at University Hospital. The suite was designed to provide dedicated spinal and orthopaedic imaging. Having suites available that are dedicated to a specific patient population reduces the time required to reset equipment between procedures, allowing more patients to be seen within the same block of time.
