Why would I need a blood transfusion?

When you have an operation, if too much blood is lost, the hemoglobin level (the number of red blood cells) can become seriously low.

  • Red blood cell transfusion may be needed to increase a seriously low hemoglobin level and prevent other complications.
  • Platelet and plasma transfusion may be needed to help the blood to clot if bleeding is ongoing.
