There are many different areas to learn the role of a Social Worker in an acute care facility. It first starts with your interest in a helping profession and healthcare. From there you can specialize in specific patient populations. We attempt to match students to their interests and learning goals, but this is not always possible due to program availability. To apply for a student Social Work placement at LHSC, please connect with your field learning specialist at your university to discuss the various opportunities and determine your areas of interest.
The field learning specialist will submit your resume and cover letter to job postings on your behalf.
Interview
The interview is your chance to shine and show what you have learned in school and in other placements. You will be given the opportunity to show how you would apply your learning to the healthcare environment.
Onboarding
The onboarding process involves steps that will be outlined by your program coordinator. They will help you set up tasks such as learning modules and how to access the learning system as well as N95 mask fitting, a two-step TB test and obtaining updated vaccination records.
First Day and Orientation
On your first day you will meet the program coordinator and the other students completing their placements alongside you. The program coordinator will complete orientation for you and the other students.
The program coordinator will show you the Social Work office and provide you with the materials you will need for your placement.
After orientation, the program coordinator will introduce you to your supervisor. The supervisor will provide a tour of the units you will be working on and introduce you to your new team members.
