Faculty Development at CSTAR
Instructor development is one of the most crucial considerations for providing a meaningful learning experience for course attendees. In early 2019 we began offering an introduction to simulation course for Clinical Educators at CSTAR with a focus on simulation design and delivery. We continue to offer this course as part of the Clinical Educator Development Program and it is open to any others who lead simulation programs at CSTAR.
Introduction to Simulation Part 1: Preparing for Simulation
Upon completion of this program, learners will be able to:
- Identify appropriate application of simulation based on learner needs and desired outcomes.
- Construct simulation scenarios based on learning objectives
- Develop an evaluation plan to measure the impact of the education program
Introduction to Simulation Part 2: Leading Simulation
Upon completion of this program, learners will be able to:
- Explain the importance of feedback and debriefing for learning and performance improvement
- Implement strategies to reduce learner anxiety in simulation situations and debriefing
- Apply a model for debriefing in order to help learners identify gaps and improve or sustain good future performance.
Other institutions currently offer comprehensive education:
- Sim-One Educator Courses
- Centre for Medical Simulation – includes resources for instructor development as well as course offerings for Simulation Instructor Training.
- Simulation Innovation Resource Center – for great resources on simulation design, educator development, mindfulness in simulation, and even simulation templates.
