What to Expect

During your time with us, you will meet several people who will teach you about your condition and its management. To get to know us better, here is a description of each team member's role.

Paediatric Endocrinologist

  • A paediatric endocrinologist is a specially trained doctor who has experience treating children and adolescents with hormone disorders.
  • Your child's medical care will be supervised by this physician.
  • He or she will also spend time with you and your child discussing management of the hormone disorder at home.
  • This physician is available to you at your regular check-ups every 3-6 months.

Nurse Clinician

  • A registered nurse with additional education and experience in endocrinology will help you understand your condition, medications and routines for managing your condition.
  • The nurse clinician is available to you at the time of diagnosis and in subsequent follow-up appointments and telephone calls.

Social Worker

  • A social worker is available to provide emotional support and counselling to patients and their families. They will help you deal with the changes involved in adjusting to your child’s diagnosis.
  • You may find it helpful to discuss personal, financial and family concerns that arise. The social worker can give you information about community resources to help with living expenses and the cost of medications.
  • The social worker is available to you at the time of diagnosis and in subsequent follow-up appointments.

Paediatric Medical Day Unit (PMDU) Clinic Nurses

  • Registered nurses who provide day-to-day care in the medical day unit.
  • You may be involved with the staff nurses around medical investigations and procedures.

Dietitian

  • A team member who has studied nutrition and the effect of food on the human body.
  • The dietitian is available to you to provide counselling if changes in your diet will help your condition.
