Shared leadership is a shared decision-making model that provides an opportunity for every voice on the interdisciplinary team to be heard and valued. Shared leadership consists of core teams, comprised of all disciplines, that have decision making power for most issues. This structure incorporates the principles of evidence based practice and patient/family centered care to improve processes and outcomes. It is inclusive of volunteer and patient representatives.
Critical care was a pioneer at London Health Sciences Centre in the formation of a shared leadership model in 2003. The four core teams are high functioning and diverse in their multidisplinary team members and mandates. The four teams are: facilities and technologies, healthy workplace, clinical practice and education/research.
