dextrose (Glucose)

Indication

  • Hypoglycemia

Dosage Guidelines

  • 10% Dextrose (D10W): 2-4 mL/kg IV, followed by a maintenance infusion of D10W at 6 to 8 mg/kg/min (85 to 110 mL/kg/day)
  • Glucose calculation:  x mg/kg/min = % Dextrose x rate (mL/hr) x 0.167

Administration

  • IV direct given slowly over 15 minutes
  • IV continuous infusion

Adverse Effects

  • Hyperglycemia
  • Rebound Hyperglycemia
  • Glycosuria
  • Dehydration (if glycosuria present)
