magnesium sulfate

Indication

  • The treatment of hypomagnesemia

Dosage Guidelines

  • 25-50 mg magnesium sulfate /kg/dose IV q8-12 hours (2-3 doses may be needed)

    (Equivalent to 0.1-0.2 mmol elemental magnesium/kg/dose)

Administration

  • IV intermittent slow infusion over 2-4 hours

Adverse Effects

  • Cardiovascular: Flushing (dose related), hypotension and vasodilation
  • CNS and respiratory depression
  • Endocrine and Metabolic: hypermagnesemia (monitor CNS depression and decreased muscle tone)
  • Adverse effects are associated with rapid rates of infusion

Comments

  • Monitor heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory rate during the infusion
  • Monitor serum magnesium levels
  • Use with caution in patients with renal impairment
