phosphate (as sodium phosphate oral solution)

Indication

  • Treatment of metabolic bone disease of prematurity, usually in conjunction with calcium supplements
  • Treatment of hypophosphatemia in neonates able to tolerate oral supplements

Dosage Guidelines

  • Start at 0.5 mmol elemental phosphate/kg/day

Administration

  • ORAL: Mix with feeds
  • Do not administer at the same time as calcium supplements

Adverse Effects

  • Irritating to gastric mucosa
  • Diarrhea
  • Hypernatremia
  • Hyperphosphatemia, hypocalcemia

Comments

  • Advisable to treat concomitant hypocalcemia, if present
  • Monitor for response to therapy: serum phosphate, ionized calcium, sodium and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) twice monthly
  • Monitor urine and stool output daily (use caution in renal failure)

Supplied As

  • Sodium phostphate oral liquid.  Each mL of solution contains 4.8 mmol of sodium and 4.2 mmol of phosphate
