salbutamol

Indication

  • Bronchodilator used in infants with reversible obstructive airway disease

Dosage Guidelines

  • 1.25 mg/dose via nebulizer q4-12 hours prn up to q2 hours maximum
  • If tachycardia occurs, decrease dose by 0.25 mg until heart rare normalizes

Administration

  • Nebulizer: inhalation solution diluted to a total of 3 mL with normal saline
  • May be mixed with ipratropium and budesonide solutions just prior to administration

Adverse Effects

  • Increased heart rate, peripheral vasodilation, hyperglycemia, hypokalemia, skeletal muscle tremor, feeding intolerance 

Comments

  • Monitor heart rate and, if elevated, do not administer any further doses until heart rate has decreased.  Lower the dose for subsequent treatment course.
