Day Surgery Unit

University Hospital

On the day of your surgery, patients should register with Patient Registration, located on the main floor of University Hospital, to the right of the main entrance. 

Victoria Hospital

On the day of your surgery, please arrive two hours before your scheduled surgery time. Surgery registration is located at D2-200.  

You may park in the patients and visitors parking garage and come in on to level 2 of B tower. Continue down to the very end of this main hall to D2-200, where your surgery registration will take place.  

General Information

NOTE: When you arrive at the hospital, please leave your overnight bag in the trunk of your car if you are being admitted after surgery. Once you are admitted to the floor, your friend or family member can bring your overnight bag to your room.

LHSC (London Health Sciences Centre) assumes no responsibility nor liability for lost and/or damaged personal property, valuables, belongings, and/or assistive devices and will not consider reimbursement for any lost or damaged items. 

Please wear appropriate clothing to accommodate your post-operative care. For example:

  • Shoulder surgery: Please wear or bring an oversized shirt that buttons up at the front.
  • Knee surgery: Please wear or bring oversized pants, pants that open on the side, or large shorts.  

Bring

  • OHIP card
  • Denture cup  
  • Eye glass case
  • Hearing aid case
  • Medications * Victoria Hospital requests a list of medications and University Hospital requests you bring all medications. If you are uncertain, please confirm with your care team.
  • All the booklets and literature you received about your surgery  

Leave at home

  • Valuables including but not limited to jewelleries, laptop etc.
  • Large amounts of money  

You will be asked to change into a hospital gown, cap or other appropriate clothing when brought into the Day Surgery Unit. If you are a same-day admission patient, your clothes and belongings will be given to a family member/ friend/ or significant other. If you are going home the day of your surgery, your clothes and belongings will be placed in Day Surgery and will be given back to you when you are ready to go home. Have your belongings in a reusable bag such as duffle bag or backpack that can secure them.

You will be asked

  • If there are any changes to your health, medications, and personal information
  • To confirm your surgical procedure 
Processes
  • Blood work and any other tests will be done if needed.  
  • An intravenous (IV) will be started and (IV/Oral) medications will be given as ordered by the doctor.
  • Your nurse will go over the instructions for your care after your surgery, with your family/ significant other/friend.    
  • You may also see someone from physiotherapy or respiratory therapy
  • You will meet your anesthesia doctor.
  • Your family member or friend will be allowed to sit with you until you go to the operating room.
  • You will be taken to the operating room by a staff member.
