(LONDON, Ontario) – At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 25, there was a fire in the visitor parking garage at University Hospital. Three vehicles were fully consumed on level two before the fire was contained.
An investigation immediately ensued, which involved local police and fire authorities, and subsequently the Ontario Fire Marshal. During this investigation, no cars could be removed from the parking garage. As of approximately 1:30 p.m. today, the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office concluded its investigation, after an eye witness account revealed that the cause was a car that caught fire and not arson, as was originally suspected. As such, the garage has been released to LHSC.
An initial engineering assessment has been completed and vehicles on the first level can now be removed; however those on levels two and above will have to remain in place for at least a few more hours pending the area immediately around the fire being shored up and engineering approval to proceed with vehicle removal is finalized.
It is expected that the garage will be functional for all patient, visitor and staff parking needs before tomorrow morning.
