Victoria Hospital Resumes Normal Operations Following Power Outage
Repairs to the damaged electrical transfer switch at London Health Sciences Centre’s (LHSC) Victoria Hospital have been completed and all electrical power, including backup emergency power, has been fully restored following the outage on December 20.
All clinical operations have resumed and LHSC is receiving and treating regional and local trauma cases as normal. No further patient care impacts are anticipated.
As a result of LHSC’s precautionary measures, 14 non-urgent diagnostic exams were deferred and are in the process of being rescheduled to ensure they are completed prior to any scheduled follow-up appointments. Additionally, 60 elective surgeries were deferred and care teams are reaching out directly to impacted patients to reschedule.

On Thursday, December 20, various areas within Victoria Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) experienced an electrical failure. Building systems have returned to normal function, however, repairs are required to a damaged electrical transfer switch.
In the event of a power failure it could take up to 15 minutes to manually switch to backup emergency generator power. Normally this change over would occur within a few seconds.
Out of an abundance of caution, and in the interest of patient safety, on Friday December 21 operating room and medical imaging cases have been deferred. Affected patients are being contacted directly by their care team.
Trauma patients within London will be stabilized and assessed at LHSC and if required will be transferred to an appropriate hospital. LHSC notified its regional partners that these challenges are also impacting our ability to accept trauma patients from outside London and are being diverted appropriately.
Victoria Hospital patients can be assured they will continue to receive high quality and safe patient care. It is anticipated this precautionary state will last up to 24 hours.
