The Transplant - Infusion of donor cells
Two days after your chemotherapy is finished, your body is ready to receive the donated peripheral stem cells or bone marrow. The process is a lot like having a simple blood transfusion.
When the peripheral stem cells or bone marrow are infused:
- The donor cells are brought to your bedside.
- Your central intravenous line is prepared.
- The cells are infused into your central line in the same way as a bag of blood would be infused into an intravenous line. There will be one or more bags to infuse.
- A nurse will check your blood pressure, heart rate and breathing during the infusion.
Family members or friends are welcome during the infusion.
It will take anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes to infuse the stem cells depending on whether peripheral blood stem cells or bone marrow is used.
During this time, you can rest, read, listen to music, watch television, or visit with your family and friends.
