Assessments

Standardized intake process

At check-in, you will be welcomed by our COMET Clinic staff and requested to fill out a few questionnaires, which will take approximately 5-10 minutes. These will help us better assess your medical, surgical, and psychosocial history, and help us understand your values, beliefs and areas of need when they provide counseling to develop an individualized management plan.

Body Composition Assessment

The BIA machine in the COMET Clinic, InBody 770, detects resistance to alternating currents applied to the body to calculate how much water, fat, muscle, and bone you have. This test takes 60 seconds to complete and is very safe. However, it is not recommended for individuals with artificial electrical implants, such as pacemakers, defibrillators or in individuals who are pregnant or menstruating.

Prior to testing, do NOT:

  • Eat or exercise for three hours
  • Consume alcohol or caffeine for 24 hours
  • Use lotion or ointment on your hands or feet
  • Use a sauna or hot shower

Prior to testing, DO:

  • Hydrate well the day before
  • Stand upright for at least five minutes
  • Use the bathroom
  • Remove all socks, pantyhose, shoes, articles of heavy clothing (jackets) and metal objects (jewelry, watches, belts)
  • Warm yourself up for 15-20 minutes if the weather is cold
Liver Specialist Assessment

After you have been assessed by our clinic nurses, you will be seen by our team of liver specialist doctors and hepatology / gastroenterology fellows. This team will review your medical, surgical and psychosocial histories, medications, and laboratory and imaging studies. They will also perform a comprehensive physical examination which will include a vibration-controlled transient elastography scan (FibroScan).

Elastography is a non-invasive imaging test that indirectly estimates the amount of scarring (fibrosis) in the liver by calculating liver stiffness. It also estimates how much fat is present in your liver. You may have already had Shear-Wave elastography test done, which is a similar test.

After this assessment, you will be provided personalized counseling and recommendations for the management of your MASLD, including individualized weight loss goals and medications. You will also be offered an opportunity to participate in the many drug trials and research studies that our specialists are involved in. These studies provide you a unique opportunity to potentially treat your condition while allowing you to directly contribute to scientific discovery and the search for a cure.

Physiotherapy Assessment

Our physiotherapists will review your relevant history, surgeries, as well as current and previous physical activities, including any barriers to performing physical activities. They will also assess your fitness level through a few simple tests, so please wear comfortable clothing and shoes to your visit to the COMET Clinic.

After your assessment is complete, based on your schedule, access to equipment, motivation level and overall fitness, our physiotherapists will provide you specific recommendations for physical activities and exercises you should perform to meet your weight loss and overall health goals. They will walk you through any exercises or activities that you are not familiar with and provide you material you can refer to at home as well. This will ensure that you are performing the activities safely, without risking injury.

Dietitian Assessment

The dietitian will review your relevant medical, surgical, and psychiatric history, especially as it relates to nutrition, such as celiac disease, eating disorders, and previous bariatric surgery. In addition, they will review your:

  1. three-day food journal,
  2. previous experiences with diets,
  3. dietary restrictions and preferences,
  4. motivation to lose weight,
  5. barriers to following a diet,
  6. body composition and
  7. fitness level.
