Blood and Marrow Transplant Program

The Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program provides consultation, evaluation, treatment, and post-transplant care for patients needing stem cell transplants. The program works with onsite stem cell collection (apheresis) and stem cell processing facilities at Victoria Hospital. Patients are seen in outpatient clinics at the Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre and transplanted at Victoria Hospital’s Inpatient Oncology Unit and Day Hospital located on the 7th floor of the C-Tower.

The team cares for approximately 100 new transplant patients each year. It also coordinates and performs stem cell collections for related stem cell donors. LHSC’s BMT Program became accredited by the Foundation of Accreditation in Cellular Therapy (FACT) in 2023 which demonstrates commitment to high quality and performance standards.

The multidisciplinary BMT program is led by Dr. Anargyros Xenocostas and includes transplant physicians, Verspeeten BMT clinic nurses, a transplant unit clerk, hematology oncology nurse practitioners, inpatient oncology nurses, apheresis nurses, transfusion medicine laboratory technologists, pharmacists, social workers, a dietitian, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and administrative staff. Additionally, the BMT Program utilizes the services of various departments within Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
